A hungry and angry bear makes her debut in Children Fiction Books. Pearlie the polar bear is thwarted of getting a warm meal from a ship. Children can read about how the bear is affected by global warming in this not so fiction short story. All is not pretty even in fiction books. This bear shows how reality creeps into the world of children fiction books.
One day, during lunchtime, Pearlie, the white polar bear, was feeling ravenous. She sniffed around to search for food. The cold, white landscape was bare and still. There was not a single plant or animal life in sight or smell.
Pearlie was desperate. Her stomach growled hungrily. In the stillness of Alaska, the rumblings sounded like thunder. Pearlie walked around in search of food. Suddenly, she caught a whiff of something delicious. It smelled like vegetation.
Pearlie followed her nose and walked towards the heavenly scent of food. Mmm … Pearlie was almost hypnotized by the wonderful aroma of food! It had been ages since Pearlie had a bite to eat.
As Pearlie walked, the scent grew stronger and stronger. Pearlie became aware that the smell wafted from a giant structure parked in the center of the icy sea. The huge foreign object was a ship. Humans! Pearlie wrinkled her nose in disgust. Humans brought global warming to her homeland and chased away seals, which were her chief source of food. Pearlie blamed her lack of prey on the work of humans. Humans caused global warming with their self-centeredness.
Another waft of delicious aroma shook Pearlie wide awake from her daydreaming stance. Pearlie was hungry. She would put her quarrel with humans aside while she went ahead to forage for some of the food humans stole from animals.
Pearlie walked up to the open windows or port holes of the ship. Pearlie could sense danger where humans gathered but her hunger was greater than her primary instinct of fear. Pearlie stood directly below a window, where the stream of aroma wafted out. Pearlie could smell the food but couldn’t see it.
Pearlie stood on her hind legs to get a better view inside. She poked her head through the porthole and stared into the kitchen of the ship. Pearlie was helpless to help herself to some of the delicious food. Only her head was admitted through the porthole of the ship. Pearlie could smell and see the food cooking on the stove but she couldn’t get at it.
The cook stirring the pot screamed when she saw Pearlie the polar bear. In a moment, other humans came running into the kitchen. Soon, everyone was staring at Pearlie. Pearlie wanted to retract her head but she couldn’t bear to tear herself away from the smell of the food.
The humans talked and pointed at Pearlie excitedly. A few of them called their friends and more humans flooded the tiny kitchen. Some of them were armed with cameras and video cameras. They acted like paparazzi shooting a celebrity polar bear. Pearlie felt strange. Her head was not free to move within the small frame of the porthole. She couldn’t get at the food, and yet the irony was that she couldn’t leave when she tried to. The food was mesmerizing and Pearlie stood rooted to the spot.
Even as she was thinking, Pearlie felt the kickbacks of global warming as her she was desperately hungry for the food that was in front of her and yet was out of reach.
Pearlie watched as the hungry crew of the ship removed the steaming pot of food and dished out portions for everyone. Pearlie thought she would also get a portion as she had stuck her snout into the porthole. It was not to be. Poor Pearlie!
The humans had taken advantage of her. They took her pictures, tempted her with food and now she was left with nothing to satiate her hunger.
Pearlie lost her cool and roared at the humans. They stared at Pearlie in awe. A hungry bear is an angry bear. The humans refused to feed Pearlie. Pearlie wanted to tear down the wall of the ship. She rammed against it and tore at the side of the port with her sharp claws. Alas, it was all in vain. Pearlie couldn’t make the steel budge. Pearlie gave up her futile fight and walked away.
The humans had a policy of not feeding the wild animals like the polar bears. The bear is not supposed to be trained to expect food from humans. They need to continue to hunt for their food. The humans may seem to be meant to Pearlie but it was for her own good that they refused to feed her.
