Children Fiction Books want to get into the holiday mood with the festive season’s themes. Today, the children meet a creature who needs some help. In the Fiction and NonFiction world, humans and animals help one another. All life forms are good!
The story goes …
Jenny and Jimmy were bored to death on Christmas Eve. Father was still at work. Mother was busy in the kitchen, cooking Christmas Eve goodies.
“Hey, Jenny, wanna go sledding?” Jimmy asked his sister.
“Sure, let’s get permission from Mother and grab our gear!” Jenny was the first to reach Mother. Mother gave her permission and told them to return home for afternoon tea.
Jenny and Jimmy brought out their sled, or toboggan from the garage. Off they went!
Jimmy and Jenny took turns sledding down the hill. The snow was thick and the rides were exhilarating. It was Jimmy’s turn to sled downhill. Suddenly, he lost control of the toboggan and he slammed into a tree. Jenny was terrified as she raced to her brother.
“Are you all right?” she asked in concern.
“Yes, I feel okay. No broken bones!” said Jimmy.
“Oh, look! A chipmunk in the snow!” cried Jenny. “Its not moving. Is it dead?” The kids peered at the immobile chipmunk lying near the base of the tree.
“Aw shucks! I must have slammed into its home in the tree trunk. It looks like it had a concussion or something!”
“Let’s bring it home!” The children brought the chipmunk home and told Mother what had happened. Mum checked Jimmy all over for bruises but the lucky boy did not sustain any serious injury.
Mother gave the kids a cardboard box for them to house their chipmunk. Jenny and Jimmy prepared a simple bed for it. Mother gave them two old bowls to use for food and water. The chipmunk could open its eyes but it looked very frightened and was shivering in fear.
Jenny took an apple from the kitchen and Mother helped to slice it into small pieces. Jimmy placed the cut up apple into the chipmunk’s bowl.
Throughout the day, the chipmunk slowly recovered and was able to chew on a couple of pieces of apple.
The children were delighted to see their little animal friend recover.
“An apple a day, keeps the doctor away!” Jenny recounted the old proverb.
“It sure does!” Jimmy agreed. The children kept the chipmunk for as long as he needed to recover. When the squirrel like chipmunk was well enough, the kids brought the critter back to where they had found it and released it into the wild. Jimmy and Jenny felt good to have helped a little animal.
