The cat and mouse are popular animals in Children Fiction Books. This is a short story on Dom the Cat and Berry the Mouse.

Berry the field mouse worked hard all autumn, shoring up his house for the winter. Berry had dug in for a winter home. He felt like he lost a lot of weight lugging his home construction materials down his tunnel. Berry shored up the walls of his tunnel and the shell of his home. He couldn’t take the risk of soft earth collapsing on him while he was underground.

On Monday morning, Berry crawled out of his home, preparing to go out to scavenge and scrimmage for his winter food reserves. Berry had barely taken a few steps when he was met with the most fearsome creature – a cat!

“Meow! I spy a field mouse!” Dom, the cat, was as pleased as a puss who had just caught a mouse.

“Sir, I’ll have you know I’m not just a mouse! I’m Berry, the field mouse!”

“A mouse, by any other name, is still a mouse! You’re toast!”

“Sir Cat …”

“How dare you address me by the common pronoun cat? My name is Dom. I’m Dom the Cat.”

“Ok, Dom, I mean, Dom the Cat, you’re standing on my territory. This is the entrance to my home and I’m protecting my turf!”

“Hahaha! You, a tiny field mouse, are commanding me to get out of your way?”

“If you take one step closer, you’ll tumble down into my mouse hole! You’ll never get out of my special home and it will become your dungeon,” Berry glared at Dom.

“Really? Where’s your mouse hole entrance? I don’t want to spend the rest of my life holed up underground in a dark hole! I’m afraid of the dark!”

“Don’t worry, my friend, I will guide you away from my trap door, so that you won’t fall down into my hole. Turn to your right, look down to follow your shadow, and keep walking until your shadow stops.”

“Thank you! I shall follow your helpful directions!”

With that, Dom the Cat started walking away from Berry’s mouse den.

Dom had to keep following his shadow that morning. The sun, shining on his back, cast a long shadow in front of him as he walked. Dom walked until noon, when his shadow became so small that he had no shadow left to follow. Dom was puzzled. If there was no shadow to follow, what was he to do?
