Children Fiction Books presents a story on Christmas giving. Children are most ready to share as they innocently try to help out. I love children in fiction books for they present their special message on love and the spirit of Christmas. The saying, “Its more blessed to give than receive”, is very applicable for Christmas.
Jenny emptied out her savings box and counted her money. She had saved $30 and she was elated. Jenny could finally afford to buy a dress for her Christmas party. Jenny had asked Mom to buy her a new dress but Mom said her budget was stretched too tight and she couldn’t afford to buy a dress around Christmas time.
Jenny made up her mind to use her own savings to buy a dress. She wanted to attend her school party and didn’t have anything nice to wear. Thirty bucks could buy a decent dress at Walmart, K-mart of Target.
Jenny asked Mom’s permission to walk to the mall to buy her dress. Mom said it was alright if Jenny went along with a friend.
Jenny called her good friend Michaela and invited her out shopping. Michaela got permission from her mother and the two girls met at Jenny’s home before they went out happily together. Mom cautioned Jenny to return home quickly after she had run her errand. The girls were told not to loiter.
Jenny was excited over the Christmas festive preparations. She discussed with Michaela on the kind of dress she wanted to look for. Along the way, the girls met Mrs Olden, the neighborhood bag lady. Mrs Olden was pushing her shopping cart loaded with her worldly possessions.
Mrs Olden looked as though she had been crying. Her eyes were red and puffy.
“What’s wrong, Mrs Olden?” Jenny asked.
“Its nothing, girls. I’ll be fine,” Mrs Olden smiled at Michaela and Jenny.
“No, seriously, Mrs Olden, please tell us what’s wrong?” Jenny was curious and determined to get to the bottom of the matter.
“Well, I ……. I lost my winter coat when it was stolen from my cart. I went to sleep one night and the next morning, I discovered that my winter coat was pilfered from right under my nose while I was sleeping.”
“Oh dear!” cried Michaela. “What are you going to do? How are you going to get a new winter coat?”
“I don’t know how but I have to try knocking on a few doors to see if someone can spare me an old winter coat.”
Jenny thought for a moment. “Here, Mrs Olden, please take my $30. You can buy another coat from the Salvation Army charity store.”
“Oh, no, I can’t take your money. You’re only a girl. You must be needing it for yourself.”
“Its all right for me, Mrs Olden. I would rather do something for you than spend the money on myself.”
Mrs Olden was so touched she burst into tears. “Bless you, dearie. I’ll forever be grateful.” Saying so, Mrs Olden accepted Jenny’s money and made her way to the local Salvation Army store to buy a winter coat.
Michaela turned to Jenny and said, “You did good, sister! I’m proud of you!”
“Thanks. I feel so fortunate to have a family and all my needs taken care of. I wanted to do something for someone who had nobody to care for them.”
The girls turned back to walk homeward bound.
