This is my story on how a dinosaur named Sally made it into the webpages of Children Fiction Books. Some stuff are facts while others are fiction for children to read and enjoy.
Sally, the dinosaur, was the last of her kind. She had lived a very long life; sixty-five million years, to be precise. Sally was very old and she suffered from arthritis and osteoporosis. How did Sally live to be 65 million years old?
Well, Sally is a very special dinosaur. On the day she received her longevity, she also received her death sentence. Sally’s family, relatives and friends were killed in the Great Volcanic Eruption.
It happened suddenly one day and everyone was caught unawares. The volcano on the Deccan Plateau had erupted after one day of rumbling. Nobody in the dinosaur herd paid any attention to the growls and wisps of smoke that spewed from the volcano. Everybody pretty much went about their business.
Sally had been busy nesting her eggs. She had laid a cluster of eggs and was incubating them. Sally had to sit on them carefully so that they would be enclosed in the hollow of her body contour, instead of getting crushed and cracked.
Sally was getting sleepy as the air was thick with volcanic ash. Deccan Plateau was fertile and rich in vegetation. The dinosaurs loved to live here and would not move away. They tolerated the bad air as their stomachs were always full and content.
Sally was nodding off to sleep when a large roar woke her up. The ground rumbled and shook.
“Earthquake!”
“Run! The Volcano is erupting!”
There was a confusion of cries and thunderous footsteps added to the shaking of the earth. Sally saw that the volcano was erupting and spilling her guts out. The dinosaurs at the foot of the volcano were showered by red hot molten rock and ash. They were being barbecued alive! The smell of cooking flesh was sickening.
Sally wanted to run away but what about her precious eggs? The sea of volcanic ash was fast approaching her. Sally had only a split second to decide. Sally quit her nest and ran for her life. When she was at a safe distance away, Sally turned her head back and cried.
Sally sobbed for her eggs; the children she would never know. Sally watched the volcano for a while. It showed no signs of slowing down. She felt the heat coming on and knew she had to flee further away.
Sally ran away and kept on running. Suddenly, Sally felt the ground giving way. She fell and tumbled down on a downward roll until she hit the bottom. Amazingly, Sally did not die.
Sally was exposed to the radioactive metals in the inner core of the volcano. She became radioactive and immortal. Sally was devastated to learn that she could not die with her beloved eggs and dinosaur population.
Sally was only slightly bruised. She vowed to return to her nesting site and check on the condition of her eggs. Unknown to her, Sally had been magnetized and rewired after the radioactive metallic ash hit her. Sally experienced a loss of bearings. Her internal compass was broken and she couldn’t find her way back to her nest.
So sally had immortality and a lifetime to search for her old nesting site. Simultaneously, Sally was cursed with a broken internal compass. Furthermore, her nest was buried under piles of volcanic ash and molten rock. The surface of the ground was re-landscaped and difficult to locate.
Sally searched for many days. Sally searched for 65 million years. Eventually, some men found her nesting site. Can you help Sally reunite with her eggs? Would you dare to talk to Sally and tell her that her nest has been found?
Here are some fun facts that inspired this dinosaur short story for my Children Fiction Book.
A dinosaur nest that is 65 million years old was discovered in India. The dinosaur nest was buried under volcanic ash. None of the eggs can hatch because time has fossilized them. This nest is at the Cauvery river basin. Bones and dug were found along with the eggs. Volcanic eruptions could have caused tons of ashes to pour down and kill the dinosaurs.
