“Children Fiction Books” wants to tell a Halloween story that’s real spooky. Halloween plays a big part in all children fiction. Kids love Halloween and trick and treating but sometimes, Halloween has its own tricks that are not part of the treating. Come October 31, children will go out in doves to harvest the candy from homes. This story is a fiction and suitably filed in Children Fiction Books.
Jimmy and Jenny went trick or treating on Halloween night. It was seven o’clock at night and the stars shone brightly. Dark clouds hovered near the moon, threatening a spooky Halloween.
They started late as Mom had insisted on them finishing their dinner properly. She was neurotic about having hungry children walking around the neighbourhood and having fainting spells on Halloween.

Jimmy and Jenny were huge fans of Harry Potter. Jenny was dressed as a witch while Jimmy was a wizard. The children wore recycled costumes on Halloween because Mom wanted them to help save money. Anyway, it was dark at night and no one really bothered what costume you wore, as long as you wore one. The kids didn’t mind as the other children didn’t walk with them and they didn’t get teased for recycling their costumes for Halloween.
They had barely walked a few steps when suddenly, the street lamps went out.
“Oh great! A blackout on Halloween!” Jimmy grumbled.
“The houses have lights. Its only a power failure for the street lamps!” Jenny tried to look on the bright side amidst the darkness.
Suddenly, the siblings saw a girl approaching them from in front. At least, the siblings thought she was a girl, judging from her handbag she carried.
“Hi,” said the girl dressed in queer, old fashioned clothes. Her voice was soft and sweet.
“Hello,” said Jenny and Jimmy together.
“May I walk with you? I’m afraid to walk in the dark.”
“Sure,” replied Jimmy gallantly.
“What’s your name? I’m Jenny and this is my brother Jimmy.” Jenny introduced herself.
“I’m Margery. I live down the block.”
“That’s funny. We have lived here all our lives and we’ve never met a Margery in this neighbourhood.”
“My mother never allows me to play outside,” sad Margery, by way of explanation.
“Ooo …” Jenny was awed by the strictness of Margery’s mother. What are you dressed as? We’re a witch and wizard,” said Jenny, gesturing to Jimmy and herself.
“I don’t know the name of my costume. My mother gave it to me,” said the strange looking girl.
Jenny wanted to ask more but the children had reached the house and home of Farmer Green and Mrs Green.
Jimmy was the first to march up to the front door. Jimmy rang the doorbell while the children waited in anticipation.
Mrs Green answered her door bell.
The children shouted, “Trick or treat!” Mrs Green pretended to be afraid and shuddered.
“My goodness! Have you come to cast spells on me? Please spare me! Can I trade some candy for a good spell?”
“Yes! Thank you, Mrs Green!” Jenny replied gratefully.
Mrs Green poked her head back in and took out two small bags of candy, which were pre-packed at the store.
“Here you go, dears. Happy Halloween!” Mrs Green dropped a bag of candy into Jimmy’s Halloween candy collection bag and another into Jenny’s outstretched hand with her bag.
“Mrs Green, can Margery have a Halloween candy bag too?” Jimmy spoke up before Mrs Green slammed her door shut.
“Who’s Margery?” asked Mrs Green in puzzlement.
“She’s our friend,” said Jenny, turning around to look at Margery.
Jenny was amazed! There was no one behind them! Where was Margery? Where had Margery gone in the dead of the night? Jenny and jimmy looked down the street but there was no one in sight.
“That’s funny! Margery was here just a little while back. She was with us. How did she suddenly disappear?”
Mrs Green was also shocked. “Tell me about Margery. What was she like?”
Mrs Green listened attentively while the children described Margery.
“I’m afraid you’ve met the Ghost of Margery,” Mrs Green said.
“Ggghhhooosssttt?” Jimmy’s teeth were chattering in fear.
“Yes, Margery the Ghost comes out on Halloween to go trick or treating with some children.” Mrs Green looked worried. “Legend says she appears to accompany children on their trick or treating rounds. Margery herself was killed when she went out treating one Halloween night. That is why she made her mission to accompany kids who walk alone on Halloween night. The legend says that Margery appears to warn children that something bad might happen to them. You kids had better get back home. There might be bad luck coming if you’ve seen Margery the Ghost this Halloween.”
“Yyyesss … we’ll better get home before we see more ghosts!” Jenny’s teeth were also chattering in fear.
The children walked home quickly and told Mother all about their adventure with Margery the Ghost. Mother was shocked. “I never expected Margery the Ghost to appear! I thought she was just a legend to frighten the children! Thank goodness you’re both home, safe and sound!”
Mother gave Jenny and Jimmy some hot chocolate. She sent them to upstairs to brush their teeth and then to bed.
