Children Fiction Books has a new story on a kind of ugly piglet that was adopted by a dog. Animals make friends in the world of fiction and nonfiction. They even take care of another species sometimes. As animals have a special place in Fiction Books, here is another animal story for children to enjoy.
Champion Charmaine, the sow, had just delivered a litter of seven piglets. She was very proud of her children. They were beautiful, with coats of soft hair. Six of Champion Charmaine’s piglets had light colored coats with some sprinklings of brown and black patches. The seventh piglet was white and very fair. This little male piglet looked like a wee little thing.
When his siblings fought to latch on to their mother Champion Charmaine, this wee piglet, named Patrick, was always pushed away by his hungry brothers and sisters. Patrick squealed in vain but nobody paid any attention to him. Patrick was almost dying of hunger.
Champion Charmaine saw that Patrick was weak and unlucky enough to be the runt of the litter. She rejected him. Her instincts of survival in the wild kicked in and she knew that the survival of the fittest would naturally eliminate the weaker piglet.
Champion Charmaine simply gave up on Patrick and didn’t help him. Even when her six other piglets finished suckling, she wouldn’t let Patrick have a go at it. Patrick cried and as he grew weaker, he whimpered.
Champion Charmaine’s owner, Farmer Brown, saw Patrick lying inert and scooped him up. Farmer Brown had an idea on how to save Patrick. He had a female dog, Dahlia, a bitch, who had just delivered her litter of puppies. His pet dog Dahlia might be coaxed to befriend Patrick and let his suckle.
Farmer Brown knew he had to mask the scent of the piglet and let his dog make believe that Patrick was just another one of her pups. Farmer Brown used a blanket from the puppies’ enclosure and wrapped Patrick with this blanket. Farmer Brown hoped that the puppies’ scent would be transferred onto Patrick so that he would get accepted by Champion Charmaine.
In the meantime, Farmer Brown had his wife prepare a milk bottle for Patrick. Poor Patrick felt strange with the bottle and he didn’t take to it. Farmer Brown carried Patrick to his dog, Dahlia, and gingerly set him down. Dahlia sniffed at Patrick and licked his hairy coat. Patrick was sufficiently warmed and nudged into action. He located Dahlia’s teat and started suckling. Dahlia didn’t treat him any different from her own pups.
Farmer Brown was gratified towards Dahlia. The old girl pulled through for him. This is the story of how a piglet named Patrick was saved by a dog named Dahlia.
If one species of animal can save another animal from a different species, Man can do much more for his fellow human species.
