Today, Children Fiction Books will tackle an unknown monster in the sea as a short story. This is a real monster-like creature that has found its way into Children Fiction as it is a common occurrence found in the ocean. Usually, Fiction Books contain scary sea monsters. But, this monster is a real one that children will respect and keep a distance from it.
The children tell the story …
“Are we there yet?” Jimmy and Jenny wanted to try out their new inflatable dingy at the beach. They persuaded Mom to bring them to the Windsurfing Club as there were life guards, a pound and a boat rescue crew. Jimmy and Jenny would wear life vests and set their dingy out on the pond. It would be pretty safe. Mom agreed.
“If you say that one more time, I’m going to throw up at you,” said Jenny. She was experiencing some motion sickness and wished Mom would stop the car.
“Mom, Jenny is going to throw up on me!”
“Kids, stop bickering. We’re here. Yep, this is it.” Mom pulled up her car at the parking space outside the Windsurfing Club.
It was not a moment too soon. The kids were bored right out of their brains.
In a flash, Jenny and Jimmy had changed into their swimsuits. Mom untied their dingy from the roof of their car and helped the children carry it to the manmade lagoon. She made Jenny and Jimmy wear their life vests.
“Don’t fall out of your dingy. If you do, swim towards it.”
“Don’t worry, Mother!” The children replied in unison. The kids got off on the right foot by launching their rubber inflatable in the water. Jenny and Jimmy managed to board their craft and row out towards the center of the lagoon.
“Cool! We’re actually rowing!” cried Jimmy excitedly.
“Yes! I want to row to the observation tower!” Jenny pointed to the metal structure at the center of the lagoon.
“Right! Let’s turn this thing around and keep rowing in that direction.”
“Look! A fish!” Jenny pointed to a flash of sliver in the murky water. She leaned over and before Jimmy could warn her, Jenny fell overboard!
“Help!” Jenny cried out in fear. The inflatable had spun out of control after Jenny fell into the water. Jimmy had to work hard to keep the boat steady.
“I’m coming!” Jimmy tried to reassure his sister.
“Jimmy! Something has got my leg!” Jenny’s panic stricken face was white with fear.
Jimmy had rowed the boat towards Jenny. Mom had seen Jenny fall into the water and she went to fetch the lifeguard. Mr Blue, the lifeguard, jumped into the water, pulling a life buoy behind him.
In a matter of seconds, Mr Blue had reached Jenny. He helped Jenny to get on board the boat. Then Mr Blue got on board too. Mr Blue asked jenny to sit at the center while he sat at one end of the small boat. Jimmy maintained his position at the other end of the boat.
Jenny was shaken but otherwise fine. Her life vest had saved her. Her legs were coated in a mysterious looking white film of soft, soggy, sticky substance.
Mr Blue helped Jimmy to row back to shore. Mom was so worried that she cried tears of relief. Mr Blue fetched some clean water to help Jenny clean the sticky mess from her legs.
“It looks like a monster has got my legs!” Jenny hated the sticky, gluey stuff on her legs.
“That’s mucilage,” explained Mr Blue.
“What’s a mucilage?” asked everyone, almost in unison.
“A mucilage is a blob of living and dead organic matter. Global warming of the seas provided warmer waters that are conducive to formation of mucus like sea “snow”. Tiny hitch-hikers like shrimp and copepods attach themselves to this glob for safety in numbers. We got to keep your legs clean to prevent anything bad from happening.”Mr Blue told them.
Jenny was relieved at his explanation. She was glad there was no monster who had attacked her legs.
Mr Blue took out his First Aid kit and applied some antiseptic to Jenny’s legs.
“Whew! What an adventure!” Jenny was tired.
“Yes, we’ll better call it a day” Mother got their things ready. They thanked Mr Blue for his help and carried their dingy back to the car.
Jenny and Jimmy were subdued and exhausted. They fell asleep in the car for their journey back home.
