Somer Thompson makes an appearance in the pages of Children Fiction Books. Miss Thompson is one of the children whose tragic story made a non fiction entry into the world of real fiction. The video on Somer Thompson is below.
One afternoon, Somer Thompson, 7 years old, was walking home from school with her siblings and some neighbors. Miss Thompson was minded by her older siblings and friends. Their parents believed that there was safety in numbers. They were right until someone broke rank and ran away from the school of children.
Somer Thompson had a small squabble with a neighbor in the group of children. Miss Thompson was indignant. She was as angry as a 7 year old could be angry. Her sibling reprimanded her by telling her to stop quarreling. Ms Thompson felt upset and alienated from the group. She ran ahead of them. She’ll show them and get home before they did.
Somer Thompson did run ahead and did get away from her group of siblings and friends. She was not within earshot of them.
Something happened to little Miss Thompson on Monday, October 19. She didn’t reach home ahead of the others. She simply vanished. It was not an alien abduction. This was not Nome, Alaska, where residents allegedly experienced the Fourth Kind. Instead, this was Orange Park, Orange County, Florida, where housing estates were crammed full of people. There were around 87 registered sex offenders within a 5 mile radius of Thompson’s neighborhood.
Somer Thompson’s mother, Diena Thompson, and her boyfriend searched for her for about two and a half hours. They searched in vain for Somer. Finally, her mother flagged down a patrolling squad car and reported her daughter missing.
Detectives on the trail of Somer Thompson reasoned that the densely populated neighborhood had no revenue to dispose a body. They kept a watch on the neighborhood refuse disposal trucks.
The Sheriff’s deputies trailed all of the garbage trucks back to its designated dumping grounds. Each man watched his designated garbage truck as it unloaded its dump. This was done to check the garbage before more garbage was dumped and to avoid sifting through more tons of waste. The destination was a landfill out of state. Just north of Florida, in Georgia, there was a landfill for garbage dumps. More investigators arrived at this landfill to search for Somer Thompson.
Detectives found a child’s body as one of the trucks unloaded its garbage. The Sheriff had to break the news to Diena Thompson and the public. Positive identification of the body wasn’t done yet but based on the description of the clothing, the body was a near match to Somer Thompson. Somer’s father said he saw Somer’s birthmark on the body and he was pretty sure Somer was dead.
Somer Thompson’s parents are very upset. Diena Thompson had immediately pleaded for the return of her little girl on the day she went missing. Nobody expected Somer would have met such an end. The family had lived in Orange Park for some time and thought they knew their neighborhood.
Kids like me should pay attention to true stories like these. We walk home alone sometimes. Somer Thompson is the child to remind us to be vigilant.
Somer Thompson, rest in peace. Your killer or killers will be caught soon.
