This is a short story inside Children Fiction Books. It tells a fiction tale of how Jenny and Jimmy encountered a “ghost” in an empty house.
Jenny and Jimmy had always wondered about the empty house at the end of the road. One sleepy Saturday afternoon, the siblings were bored to death sitting at home, with nothing to keep them entertained. Jimmy had a bright spark hitting him.
“Let’s play haunted house!”
“Naw, that’s boring,” Jenny sighed. “Besides, I don’t believe in ghosts!”
“We could go play at the empty house down the road,” Jimmy was pleased with himself for his brilliant idea.
“Nooo! That’s illegal. Its wrong to enter someone else’s house, even if its empty.”
“Ha! You’re just chicken!’
“Am not! I’ll go just this once but if we get into trouble, I’ll tell Mom it was all your fault!”
“If she finds out! Which she won’t, since she’ll believe us when we say we want to go play at the empty car park outside.”
Sure nothing, Jenny and Jimmy’s unsuspecting mother waved her kids on when they said they were going to play outdoors.
“Race you to the house!” Jimmy was off in flash.
“That’s unfair! You didn’t count to three, like we always did, before a race!”
“Too late, I’ve reached the house!” Jimmy was at the gate, trying to peer into the window a few feet away. “I spy … a broken window! C’mon, that’s our entry!”
Jimmy dragged Jenny along as he scampered to the entrance of his haunted house adventure.
“Adventure, here we come!” Jimmy climbed over the window ledge, on the ground floor of the three storey house. Someone had cleaned away the cut glass off the ledge. Below the window casement, the grass was littered with broken shards of glass.
Jenny was scared but Jimmy had vaulted over the window ledge and was inside the house. Jenny was too afraid to turn tail and run home. She was more scared of going home alone, then she was at this strange house. Jenny’s mind was made up, she too climbed over the ledge, taking care not to touch the frame of the window, for fear of cutting herself on the remaining shards of glass.
“Wow! This house is grand! Look at the chandelier!” Jimmy was standing below one of the biggest lighting structures Jenny had ever laid eyes on.
“Awesome! I wish we had such pretty lights!”
“Its spooky here,” Jenny said with a shiver.
“Pooh! Don’t be such a scared cat!” Jimmy was beginning to poke around the room where they had entered. “There’re so much stuff around. I wonder where the owners went?”
“Please, let’s go, we aren’t supposed to trespass on private property,” Jenny pleaded.
Crash!
“Careful, Jimmy, don’t break anything!” Jenny pleaded with her brother.
“That wasn’t me! Now, I’m getting scared!” For the first time since entering the house, Jimmy was feeling scared.
“Let’s go!” said Jenny. This time, Jimmy raised no objections. The children turned and walked towards the window.
“Freeze!” A voice rang out across the room.
“Hit the deck! Its cops!” Jimmy and Jenny quickly flattened themselves in the traditional surrender pose.
“Hahaha! You kids are so cute!” said the voice.
Jimmy and Jenny summoned enough courage to raise their heads to look towards the direction of the voice. He was a man with a shaggy beard, and moustache. His face looked kinda rough,
“What are you doing here? We thought you were a ghost!” Jenny could barely keep her teeth from chattering.
“I entered the house legally as the window was broken.” The man gestured at the window. “I’m a squatter. I live here and take care of this place. My home was washed away by the What are you kids doing here?” The man glared at them.
“We were just checking out the house … we thought this would be a cool place to play Haunted House … we’ll be on our way now,” Jimmy was trying not to sound nervous.
“Well, you had better get packing. Now, you don’t tell anybody I’m here and I won’t tell anybody you entered this house without permission from your Mom.”
“Yes, sir! We won’t breathe a word, sir!” Jenny and Jimmy almost blurted out this promise in unison.
Jimmy and Jenny could leave faster than they wished. Once outside, Jimmy said, “Don’t look back, Jenny, or we’ll be turned into pillars of salt”
“But that’s a punishment from a story in the Bible,” said jenny.
“Whatever! But whatever you do, don’t look back!”
Jenny and Jimmy got outside the house and ran home as fast as their legs could carry them.
