Once upon a time in the Land of Children Fiction Books, there was a boy named Q. Q made it into a short story in Children Fiction Books because he was a child who made use of a saying to turn back the tide of bullying behavior he faced. He used the saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me.”
Q came from home from school in tears. His mother took one look at her son’s face and then enveloped him in a warm hug.
“What’s wrong dear?”
“Mon, they’re … they’re teasing my name again!”
“You should be brave, my son. You know what they say, ‘Sticks and stones will break my bones, but names will never harm me.’”
“Its easier said than done … I hate my name. Why did you name me Q? All the children tease me so!”
“It’s a beautiful name. You father and I choose Q for you as the letter is pronounced as “Cue” and it is the single letter name that looks beautiful and sounds beautiful too.”
Q stopped crying and listened to his mother intently. “But why are the other kids teasing me so?”
“Son, it is natural for other children to pick on someone who has a different name. In fact, a few kids may even be envious of you having such a special name.”
“Maybe you are right. Sometimes, the girls surround me and ask me questions like how did I come to be named Q.”
“I told you so. You must always remember, ‘Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me’, and this will help you through.”
Q started repeating after his mother, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me.” Q smiled.
Mother looked lovingly at Q. “That’s my boy. Slowly, the children will stop teasing you when you don’t respond to their childish jokes.”
“Thank you, Mother. I like the saying. I’m going to use it from today.”
