On Christmas Eve’s afternoon, Jenny was in her room doing her homework. She wanted to finish as much school work as possible as she wanted to enjoy Christmas Day without worrying about completing homework.
Jenny was momentarily distracted as she wondered about her presents. Jenny had given her parents a Christmas wish list so she pretty much knew what to expect for Christmas.
There was at least one surprise gift she wanted. Jenny had written a letter to Santa. She asked for a gift item from the Sylvanian Families series. Jenny loved the animals and accessories of the Sylvanian Families. Would Santa be sending her heart’s desire? She had been a good girl the entire year, hoping that Santa would honor her Christmas wish.
Jenny was excited, thinking of all the wonderful presents she would be opening on Christmas Day. Her head was turned towards the window. The sky was bright and there was no hint of snow. Global warming had effected climate change. Christmas wasn’t as fun as before when they had plenty of snow. Jenny stared dreamily at the sky, wishing it to snow.
Suddenly, Jenny saw something fly across the sky. She immediately sat up. Was that Santa? Jenny had never seen Santa on his sleigh before but she had heard so much about him. Wait a minute! Jenny backtracked. It was the middle of the afternoon. Wasn’t Santa supposed to come only at night?
Jenny quickly went to her window. She was in time to catch a glimpse of a strange looking object, hurtling at great speed, across the sky. That it didn’t look like Santa. It was spinning and flying like a flying saucer. It looked like a hot air balloon but it didn’t have a basket to hold a person. It couldn’t be Santa. Santa would be riding in the basket of a hot air balloon and he would be carrying his load of toys in his basket.
Jenny stood rooted to the ground, fascinated. Just then, Mother came out of the kitchen and went to Jenny’s room.
“Jenny! The news said there is a hot air balloon flying over Fort Collins, in Denver, Colorado. Have you seen anything in the sky?”
“Yes, Mom. But I think it has flown away!” Jenny pointed at the general direction where she last saw the weird looking balloon. “I thought Santa was coming in a balloon!”
“Santa will be coming in his traditional sleigh and reindeer,” Mom laughed.
Jenny smiled and together, mother and daughter walked back into their house.
