This is one of the short stories in Children Fiction Books, on the benefits of eating vegetables. They are good for health.
Jenny and Jimmy were seated at dinner when Mother started serving fresh vegetable salad.
The siblings wrinkled their noses and made faces of disgust.
“Now, children, you know that greens are good for a healthy and balanced diet. Every day, you should eat two servings of vegetables to get your source of essential vitamins and minerals.”
“But Mommy, fresh vegetables are yucky!” Jimmy protested.
“No, dear, vegetable are our friends. Why children should eat vegetables? They want us to eat them to keep us healthy. In return, we can plant more vegetables so that they get more relatives to share their lives with. Let me show you a picture of a smiling pepper.”
Mother went to her writing table drawer to fetch a photo of a Jalepeno pepper, also known as a capsicum.
“Gee,” said Jenny, “I’ve never seen a smiling Jalepeno pepper before!”
“Neither have I,” Mother said, “but he or she seems friendly.”
“Cool,” Jimmy was amused. “Do you think all Jalepeno peppers smile?”
“Let’s find out after dinner. Let’s go to the kitchen and cut up some peppers. We can cook them as toppings for pizza.”
“Yum! I love pizza!” Jenny smacked her lips.
“Me too!” echoed Jimmy, “Let’s hurry up and finish our salad. Then we can cut peppers and make pizza!”
